Statement of Significance

The site of the former Moore’s Warehouse and the original Port Store has historic significance given its connection to Port Denison as a port and a later as a holiday destination. The place has further historic significance for its association with S. F. Moore prominent businessman and civic leader.

History

This large limestone building was built in 1868 as a warehouse for S. F. Moore, merchant and first President of the Irwin Roads Board. Following the decline of Port Denison, in 1892 the building was mortgaged by Moore to the Bank of WA for £700 as collateral for a loan of £5000. About 1914, the building became vacant and its main use for a time was as a dance hall and for other entertainments such as the annual children’s "Christmas Tree". Church services were also held in the building. In about 1930, it was purchased by Thomas Hughes and it passed to his daughter Winnie Leitch who with her husband Alec, a local builder, converted it to a guesthouse with a shop on the west side. In the 1950’s the building’s twin gable roof was replaced with a single gable. The guestrooms closed for a while but were reopened for holiday makers in the 1970s with accommodation in the north verandahs and a general shop with takeaway foods. The shop operated until the building was demolished in 1996 by the current owners. (Sources: Bain, M.
