A building of distinctive Victorian character, significant for its development as a Priory and School which formerly provided accommodation and education to Catholic girls over a large geographic area. The buildings and grounds are important for their historical association with William Criddle and the Dominican order.
Built in 1881 as a single storied building by William Criddle as the second hotel in Dongara. The building passes to the Dominican Sisters in 1902 who added a second storey and converted the building to St Dominic's Priory. In 1926 the boarding college was added, known as the Dominican Ladies College. The college closed in 1971 and has been used for community/residential purposes since. The ground floor, the original hotel, is constructed with stone walls, rendered and lined out when the timber first floor was added. Two storied timber verandahs and corrugated iron roof. The grounds which sweep down to the river contain a number of mature trees. Behind the convent the cemetery of the Sisters survives.
Assessment 1983 Construction: 1881, hotel; 1902, convent, second storey added; boarding college added 1926; hostel1971.
