The building has some architectural merit as a surviving example of 1880’s Victorian housing in this section of the Port and shows by its location on the site set back from the street that the character of early Fremantle was very difference in the 1870’s and 80’s prior to the Gold Rush. Distinctive construction of brick and face with stone which is one of the few in Fremantle. This handsome building has been classified for architectural, social, historic and streetscape significance.
The new Hotel Fremantle was commenced in 1898 and surrounds the old house on two sides. The facade of the hotel is classified. The building is two storied , stuccoed and roofed in corrugated irone with decorative fascia boards to gable ends. Some original small paned windows survive. The early character of the building is obscured by modern service pipes, plant and ventilation work. Hotel Facade Description 1974 A three storey residential hotel which is conspicuous not only for its lack of verandahs (an exception shared y the Orient Hotel of Cavanagh and the Cleopatra Hotel By J.H. Eales) but also by its materials. Although built of brick, it is one of the few to have a cladding of stone. It also has some good interior feature.
Assessment 1983: House at rear of Hotel Fremantle Construction 1885 Lot 17 Cliff St Fremantle was taken up an built upon in the first decade of settlement by Mr George Leake, who still owned the property in the 1850’s. According to the Fremantle City Council rate books, in the 1880’s W.D. Moore lived in the house on lot 17 and leased the shop on Lot 18 to Chemist E. Beatty. In 1885 a new house was built by Moore on the combined lot nos; 17 & 18. This is probably the house which remains at the rear of the site, It does straddle both of the old town lots and the architectural evidence, i.e. Regency Cottage Orne was still current in this period in Western Australia.
