This property has historical interest only as the location of a now demolished heritage place. The existing development on the site has little significance.
Historic building / structures demolished.
Jenkin Street was originally named By-the-Sea Road. It was renamed in 1909/10 for Reverend J G Jenkin of the South Fremantle Methodist Church. Stables were built on Lots 15 and 16 of Cockburn Sound Location 134 in 1906/07 for Joseph Readhead. A cottage was built the following year. Although Readhead retained ownership, in 19151/16, the cottage and stables were occupied by William Curtis. William Dunnmann was the occupant in 1920/21. No stables were listed in the 1930/31 rate book. At this time, the property was sold to Irene and John Brosnan by John Graham. The Brosnans had additions costing ₤80 constructed in the late 1930s and remained the owners of House, 35 Jenkin Street until at least 1956. A diagram dated 1954 shows the house as being brick and occupying the full width of the block. It had a full length front verandah and half-length rear verandah. No development is shown on the adjacent lots, indicating that the stables were demolished before this time. The house was owned and occupied by Luigi Passera in the early 1960s, then by B Marano, before being purchased by Mills and Ware Biscuits Pty Ltd (early 1970s). In 1974, the house was owned by Carlos D’Carmo and occupied by B Marano. The place has a number of owners between the mid-1970s and 1992, by which time it was again owned by Arnotts Biscuits Pty Ltd (previously Mills and Ware). In February 1992, the police treated as suspicious a fire that gutted the house. At this time, Arnotts were beginning to wind down their operations in South Fremantle and had been using the house as a store. It is believed that the place was subsequently demolished. This place was included in the "Heritage Study South Fremantle", prepared by John Taylor Architects, for the City of Fremantle, June 1993. It was also included in the list of heritage places in the City of Fremantle identified by the Fremantle Society (1979/80) - RED -significant for contributing to the unique character of Fremantle. During the 2019 Annual Update of the Municipal Inventory and Heritage List the heritage significance of this place was reviewed and it was found that the heritage listing referred to a building or structure that had legally been demolished in the past. It also found that the existing buildings and structures on the site do meet the threshold for inclusion on the Heritage List. On 25 July 2019 Fremantle Council resolved to remove this place from the Heritage List and to change the Municipal Heritage Inventory category to Historic Record Only to record the earlier history of the site.
This property has been redeveloped since the heritage elements were demolished and it is unlikely that any significant undisturbed archaeological material remains on site.
