Statement of Significance

The Cell Block has a close association with the Convict Establishment. York Police Station, Courthouse and Gaol Complex is a rare example of continuous government development for the purposes of law and law enforcement on one site from 1852 to 1910.

Physical Description

The Complex retains a range of fabric from all periods of its construction, excluding the 1830 – 1850 period. These include the stone gaol (1852); the gravel paved timber stables (1865); the stone and brick troopers’ cottage (1865); the red brick courthouse (1874); the exercise yard (1875); the federation style, brick lock-up keepers’ residence (1903); the four-roomed, stone and brick police station (1908) and the brick police quarters (1910). The two-storey courthouse building (1895) which faces Avon Terrace is in excellent condition and retains many of its original internal fixtures. It is constructed of red brick and local stone and has distinctive external ornamentation, indicative of its status. Traces remain of the 1852 police station, which are of archaeological significance. The site also exhibits physical information about former inmates, such as the graffiti on the walls of the stone gaol which is thought to date from the 1940s to 1960s. A full description of the Complex can be found in the Interpretation Plan (2001) and the Conservation Plan (2003).
