The Recreation Centre is significant for the following reasons: Historic Value: The building originally housed the Melville Fire Station which was hailed as the most modern in the country at the time. Authenticity: External appearance has altered a little although it has been substantially altered internally. The fire engine entrance into Canning Hwy has been bricked up.
A complex of three buildings comprising what was the fire engine garage, the fireman's quarters and the offices residence.
