Statement of Significance

As a public reserve the Square dates back to the foundation year of the colony of Western Australia (1829-30) and in part has remained a public park ever since. It was the subject of one of Western Australia's early environmental controversies in the 1880s. The Square contains three memorials which are historically significant

Physical Description

Stirling Square is a rectangular area of public parkland surrounding a church property. Stirling Square has been the main civic open space and an important focus of the sporting, social and cultural activities of the Guildford community throughout the period of European habitation. It is a landmark as the symbolic centre of the town.

History

The square is now less than half the area of the public park that was reserved as 'Church Square' in the original town plan of Guildford drawn up in 1829-30. The area of the park was reduced by half in the 1840s, when the land south of James Street was granted out to private settlers, and was again reduced by about a third in the 1890s when the railway line was rerouted and a new street (Stirling Street) was created.
