Statement of Significance

The former Three Springs Shire Hall has local historic and social significance for its role in community entertainment and recreation for almost 50 years. In addition it has further significance for its connection to the WWII pilot training base at Greenough. Given the large scale and prominent location of the building, it commands considerable streetscape value.

Physical Description

A large building of timber frame construction with timber and fibro cladding to the north, south and west sides. The north and south sides also have five large timber framed windows and two double exit doors, with windows set above. The east aspect is constructed of rendered masonry and contains the main entrance of three sets of double entry doors accessed by three steps from the street level. The entry doors are set under a verandah between two rendered masonry towers. Above the entry verandah, there are five rectangular windows. The front facade of the building is enhanced by a large curved parapet with corbelled treatments at the roof level.

History

This building was originally constructed during WWII at Greenough as a theatre for use by RAAF personnel. It was purchased by the Three Springs Shire Council and re erected with a new rendered masonry facade on the present site in 1947-48. The cost of the building was £6,500. Officially opened by the Governor, Sir James Mitchell, 21st June 1949.(Source: Carridena, by H. A. Crake, p 82).
