Statement of Significance

This place is significant for its social, cultural and spiritual associations and makes an important contribution to the streetscape. It is considered to be part of the Maylands Townsite.

Physical Description

The church is a tall design rendered in a sparse utilitarian style, which was a style favoured by the renouned architect John Hawes. This style was used in ancient times and by early Spanish architects in California and the Caribbean, as it was considered suitable for a hot and sunny climate. The building features very large and somewhat disproportionate roundel windows set high in the walls, which ensure an excellent use of light at all times. It has load bearing brickwork with stucco trimmings and dressings with a tiled roof. A notable feature is the large stained glass window depicting the Crucifixion and Resurrection of Christ, which is highlighted in the late afternoon and twilight. The church is open daily between 7am and 6pm.

History

The foundation stone was laid on 29 June 1924 by the Roman Catholic Archbishop of Perth, Most Rev P J Clune and the priest was Rev P Lynch. The building was designed by M Mullen and built by R McMullan. The building has some aesthetic appeal and social value and is an important landmark set high on a raised site.
