Statement of Significance

A strong and individual statement of a bungalow on a prominent corner [John and Broome] in a proposed heritage precinct in Cottesloe. The Japanese influence is particularly pronounced in what is possibly an American derived "Craftsman" house.

Physical Description

This 'Craftsman' or "Arts and Crafts" influenced bungalow, is somewhat of a conundrum. It is possibly built around the shell of an earlier 1901 house or is in advance of what is usually considered possible in WA. It has a strong Japanese influence. On first glance the wide gable extending the width of the house appears simply part of a 'Californian' bungalow but second glance reveals the large Tori gate motifs in the eaves of the smaller front gable. Gable screens to both eaves add visual appeal. Seven heavy battered piers covered in pebbledash hold up the heavy beams which support the roof and dominate the form. There is a small brick detailing around the top of these piers and a wide brick sill between. The floors are cement. The windows to Broome Street are grouped in threes. The front door has short sidelights and fan light of stained glass with birds and flowers above it. The door itself has a central light with two lights above. A small window has a lovely stained glass scene. The windows to John street are leadlight with stained glass - a pair of casement on either side of a pair of French doors. The smaller lights above having floral and pebble glass while that below is leaded geometrically with geometric stained glass inserts. The north western corner of the verandah has been enclosed to make an additional room and another brick addition been added beyond that. The brickwork is painted up to the lower eaves level. Above that is pebbledash. Heavy beams with others projecting beyond the eaves are unusual in Cottesloe.

History

Robert S Wade a printer and his wife owned and lived here from 1901-1922 when it was sold to Harold Hansen. In 1939 it was a guest house called Corner House. It advertised "superior Rooms, table". There has not been time to search much more of its history.
