Given its use as a place of entertainment for almost 30 years, the Drive In Theatre has social significance for the residents of Dongara.
1996 Located close to the Bowling Club and Recreation Centre, the Drive In Theatre consists of a small brick ticket office, brick projection room and kiosk and large projection screen located to the west side of the site. The parking area is asphalt paved. 2004 The screen and other infrastructure has been maintained by the local community.
Construction was completed on 17 November 1966 and the Denison Drive-In picture theatre was opened on 13 January 1967 by West Talkies owner R. Dean. Previously pictures were shown in the town hall and the school P & C ran the snack bar for many years creating much needed revenue for the school. It is one of only a few Drive-Ins left in Western Australia which is still in use, with pictures being shown in the summer months. Since 1991 the Dongara Youth Council assisted by parents has run the cinema as a fund raiser. (Source: IDHS Records; Shire of Irwin)
