Statement of Significance

Welbourne is one of the oldest houses in the area and contributes greatly to the harmonious streetscape and the historic significance of the Market Street Precinct. It represents the simple colonial cottage with handmade bricks, original joinery, remaining parts of shingled roof and the overall solid construction which is still very much intact. The house is better known as the home of John Welbourne who was an active man in Guildford in 1833-1890.

Physical Description

Early brick and iron colonial cottage c.1840. Brick walls have been painted. Roof originally shingled but now covered in corrugated iron. Verandah faces the street which is very close to front of house. Main windows are 12 paned vertical sliding sashes. Small cellar beneath house.

History

Welbourne House stands on allotment 14 which was first assigned to Spencer Trimmer in March 1836. Acquired by John Welbourne in 1842. Welbourne was a builder and carpenter who arrived in the colony in 1829. Employed on many Government contracts including Government offices in 1836. Built Guildford Gaol in 1840. Acted as postmaster, police constable & undertaker. In 1890, house sold to Stephen Gardiner, Master of Guildford Boys School. Detached building to rear thought to have housed Salvador Benedictine Monks in 1852. Building demolished c.1970s. Property currently used as a drop-in centre by Mental Health Service.
