The City of Fremantle has identified this place as being of some cultural heritage significance for its contribution to the heritage of Fremantle in terms of its individual or collective aesthetic, historic, social or scientific significance, and /or its contribution to the streetscape, local area and Fremantle. Its contribution to the urban context should be maintained and enhanced.

Physical Description

Single storey brick to sill height over limestone foundations and roughcast rendered above and a terracotta tile hipped and gabled roof house which has limestone foundations. The projecting front and gabled roofed room features decorative brickwork. The roof extends over the verandah and is supported by turned timber posts and timber frieze and balustrades. There are timber casement windows extant. Nos 2 & 4 are similar in design and materials.

History

Lot pt 997 was owned by James Simpson and Dora Lewis in 1900. They also owned lot 995 (now 8 Holland Street). A residence is recorded by 1924/5. The owner was Daisy Boatwright. The occupant was Gavin Findlay. Post office directories list Findlay as a detective.
The house was originally number 13, and became number 2 when the whole street was renumbered in 1937.
The house was occupied by John G Boatwright from c1930 until at least 1949 (when post office directory records cease).
