Statement of Significance

The place has aesthetic value for its use of classical architectural detailing in pleasing proportions which creates visual interest. The place forms a valuable contribution to Burt Street and contributes to the masonry 'wall' of Burt Street.

Physical Description

A two-storey building built to the building line of Burt Street. The exterior of the building features a stuccoed and heavily moulded facade enhanced by a decorative and pedimented parapet. The facade is symmetrical with pilasters that extend to an entablature and to the top of the parapet. Ionic and Corinthian fluted pilasters are features of the facade.

The building was built of local stone and cost £1600.

History

The Insurance Plans for Boulder c. 1900 illustrate that Lot 657 had the Friendly Society’s Hall with two shops in the front of the building, Sostenuta Pianos and a Dispensary. The building was brick.

An imposing large structure with two shops with large glass windows fronting Burt Street, the Friendly Society's Building was officially opened on 2 January 1900. A fine staircase between the two shops leads to the upper floor where the meeting hall for various lodges was situated. The foundation stone was laid by H. Glasson (president). Eight different lodges were united at the commencement. Later this was reduced to the A.N.A. and the Druids, with members of the other lodges joining them for meetings. The Lodge was the forerunner to today's Health Funds (Boulder's Hidden Secrets, 1993).
