The place has considerable significance for the Catholic community in the Capel area. It has a sense of place for generations fo Capel people, for the ceremonies and events that have taken place since 1913.
Timber framed and weatherboard clad with a steep pitched gable roof in the gothic style. Timber buttresses feature along the sides of the church.
In the early days, Capel did not have a Catholic Parish, although the site was vested in trust to the Roman Catholic Bishop in 1881. Archbishop Clune preached to a mission in the Capel Hall in 1902. Only the Wittfort and Hickey families came from Capel, with several families from Lydlow.
After a few years, Father O'Magher came from Busselton to inquire of any Catholics in the area, and walked 5 miles to the Hickey's. Later an annual mass was held on a weekday, and after the Hickey girls had been married, mass was held at the Wittfoht's home. The tradition continued until the 1920's when people got motorised vehicles. After Father Joe McCormack had the church built in 1913, mass was held once a month at the church, and an annual mass was held at the Witfolht's. The first stage of the church was the shell of the building costing 350 pounds in 1913. Later it was lined and added to, and mock buttresses were added to stop the building leaning. The church was blessed by Archbishop Clune. The first confirmation in Capel eas consecrated by Bishop McKeon in 1980. In 1992, 80th birthday celebrations took place at the fully renovated church. $40,000 was raised for the renovations by the Capel parishioners by fundraising, and the sale of one of the blocks of land donated in the 1950's by Mrs Kathleen Hardey
