HIGHLY SIGNIFICANT AT LOCAL LEVEL. High level of protection appropriate: provide maximum protection under the Town Planning Scheme with encouragement to the owner to conserve the significance of the place. Prepare a floor plan and photographically record the place prior to any redevelopment.

Statement of Significance

The place contains evidence of the early and later phases of its mining history and is highly significant at
the local level. The rare survival of a headframe and the creek-side setting give the site aesthetic
appeal. The site has the potential to reveal information about the phases of mining in the district and the
associated technology. The place also has group value as one of a number of sites that comprise the
Galena Mining Heritage Area.

Physical Description

The mine is reached via a track off the Geraldine - Coolcalalaya - Warribanno Chimney Road, about 2km from the
North West Coastal Highway. From the Highway, turn right after a creek crossing.
There are three shafts (see site plan and photographs). The main shaft, which has a timber head frame, is two
compartment, one with ladder, concrete collared, sawn timber lined. The other two are single compartment, bush
timbered, the smaller probably for ventilation; A substantial concrete engine base was presumably for the winder.
A small timber and iron shed, rubble and earth reinforced is probably the magazine. Metal artefacts, including
lengths of piping, are sparsely scattered around the site.
The early and later periods of operation are reflected in the shaft construction. The ladderway compartment may
have also functioned as a pump shaft; water removal otherwise may have been by bailer. A detailed examination
of the pipework and other remnants may clarify this.
