The place has aesthetic and historic significance as a rare example of residential development in the Old Port City area of Fremantle dating from the late nineteenth and early twentieth century. Part of a group of remnant residential buildings in Collie, Nairn and Essex Street. Example of an early cottage that exhibits changes from the Inter-War and Post World War ll period that contribute to the aesthetic character of the place.
Single storey rendered house with a tile hipped and steeply pitched roof, which continues over the veranda. The veranda is supported by rendered columns onto a low stone wall. The timber casement windows have lead lights and the central entrance has a timber and glass door.
Collie St is named after Dr Alex Collie, R.N. Surgeon on H.M.S. Sulphur, and Colonial Surgeon. With Lieut. Preston, Collie explored the Collie and Preston Rivers. Dr Collie was later Government Resident at Albany.
The cottage is first recorded as built in 1880, owned by John O' Grady, described as a four-roomed cottage in 1885. Additions were carried out in 1939 and 1953, the latter by Allen & Nicholas Architects. This included replacing the original roof with tiles. The house was used as boarding house from 1976-1993. A proposed development into a café in 1993 was refused by Council, however it was subsequently approved, as the place is currently (2002), a Café-Pizzeria.
The Fremantle MHI management category for this place was amended and adopted by the decision of Council on 28/09/2011.
