Statement of Significance

House, 73 Hampton Road, is a single storey limestone and iron house dating from c1908. The place has aesthetic value for its contribution to the streetscape and the surrounding area. It is representative of the typical building stock located within the residential areas of Fremantle. It is historically significant as a representation of typical workers' houses in the Fremantle area. The place is an example of the Victorian Georgian style of architecture.

Physical Description

House, 73 Hampton Road is a single storey, limestone and iron house designed as an example of the Victorian Georgian style of architecture. The walls are limestone with quoining to the door and windows. The roof is hipped and clad with corrugated iron. Air vents are visible between the roof and verandah. The verandah has a separate dropped corrugated iron bullnose roof. The verandah is supported by painted timber posts with decorative timber brackets. There is a high limestone wall to the front boundary which prevents further description of the front elevation.

History

The street derives its name from John Stephen Hampton, the Governor from 1862-68, previously Comptroller of Convicts in Tasmania. His son, G. E. Hampton, was Acting Comptroller-General of the Fremantle Convict Establishment.
Lot 109 on Sewerage Diagram no.77 dated 1908 shows a stone building with verandah and timber ‘sleepout’? at rear with a watercloset in the far corner at the rear of the block.
