Physical Description

St Leonard's is a timber Church in a simple Gothic style. The Church is framed using the local hardwood, karri and clad externally with karri weatherboards. Internal wall and ceiling linings are in baltic pine matchboarding. Floors are of sawn and adzed hardwood boarding. The interior features an unusual timber Gothic arch in the sanctuary area. The interior detailing and the use of baltic pine are said to reflect the influence of Norwegian mill workers. The Church is located on a prominent corner site and forms an important historic element of the townscape.

History

St Leonard's Church was designed by Perth architect, Percy Harrison, in early 1899 and was completed by November when it was dedicated by the Bishop of Perth, Dr Riley. The Church was built using voluntary labour to serve the company town of Denmark, established in 1895 by Millars, Karri and Jarrah Forests Limited. The company donated the site for the Church and offered a discount on the cost of the timber. The porch was originally located at the east (Strickland Street) end, but was relocated at the western end of the building in 1914 because access up the stairs for coffins and processions had proved difficult. The arch and sanctuary were relocated at the eastern end at the same time.
