Statement of Significance

The place demonstrates a way of life for the postmaster and or storekeeper and his or her family. The place represents significant associations with the commercial development of Shackleton. The place is integral within the character and the townscape of Shackleton. Together with the adjacent shop they form a main street streetscape representativ of Shackleton town.

Physical Description

Timber framed and corrugated iron clad behind the brick rendered frontage with stepped parapet. In addition to the symmetrical shop frontage with central recessed truncated doors, a brick front room is on the north side, with a separate entry door and small parapet. The private post boxes are still in evidence on the east side of the frontage. A skillion verandah supported by posts extends across the frontage of the shop.

History

In 1909, the first settlers came to Cokine. By 1912, the railway line from Quairading came through Shackleton. Dr Jermyns, the unofficial medical officer in the district, undertook a private survey of the townsite in 1913. The main street commemorates him. In 1916, Shackleton connected to the Goldfields Water Scheme and the town developed to the detriment of Kwolyin, which chose not to connect to the water supply. Shackleton was gazetted on 26th June 1925 and the town boundaries were established on 21st April 1951. The Post Office was originally established at this site in town. In 1927/28 a fire swept through the main street destroying this shop and the adjacent shops. They were rebuilt after the fire. In recewnt years, the post office and shop closed and the Post Office serevices are now operating from the shop next door.
