History

By 1880, the Anglican Church had reserved a site in the reserve set aside for Coolingup townsite. In 1884, the reserve was vested in trust to the Bunbury Dioscesan Trustees. In the early years of the century, services were held at Maitland's Lexden Park. Amy Maitland, a staunch pillar of the church, made inquiries for a place of worship in Capel. Amy received a telegram from the Dioscesan Headquarters to say that work should begin immediately or the funds would be re-allocated. Pressure was on FO Maitland, Amy and her brother, Dugit Layman, to organise the construction of the church. Fred Guttman was consutled as the architect and funds were called from a number of leading citizens. The flagstone foundations were laid on the clay riverbanks and construction was completed on the 17th December 1903 and dedicated on that day. The first marriage in the church was of May Hutton and Bert Scott. The stone church was demolished due to it's unsafe condition, due to the clay site. In 1923, the new church was constructed on the same property and opened in time for Christmas celebrations.
