Statement of Significance

The place is a rare, pre gold boom, colonial style building in Guildford which makes a highly significant contribution to the historic environment.

Physical Description

Single-storey brick and iron cottage c.1860. A colonial style house characterised by its simplicity in form. House has concave verandah, central front door with fanlight and sidelights, steep roof pitch, timber fretwork and two tall chimneys, with cellar below main house.

History

Thought to have been built in 1860 for Mr Guppy. He later built next door and sold this house to Traylens in 1897. William Traylen was ordained Methodist Minister. He owned a printing business in Perth and ran a small factory in his garden. He used a lathe to make axe handles, spinning wheels etc. Mr Traylen became Chairman of Metro Water Board and later Mayor of Guildford (1915-16). Property was known as 'The Pines'.
