History

During the 1930s the Agricultural Adviser was based in Katanning, making visits to the Lakes area. Field days were rarely held more than once a year in each district, but were very well attended as it was a way for the farmer to be informed of new techniques and technology. It was an important event. In the 1940s investigations were taking place into the use of copper and zinc in wheat growing. In 1941 CH Lucas of Lake Grace reported a positive response to blue stone(Copper sulphate). In 1947 the Lake Grace Roads Board asked the Department of Agriculture to conduct experiments for the development of light land (trace elements). The experiments took place on D Elliott's property south of Lake Grace. The experiments supervised by DrTC Dunne (later Director of Agriculture) and Mr FL Sheir, resulted in the opening of large areas of light land in the Lake Grace District in the 1950s and 1960s. The great rate of development in the 1950s led to the Research station in 1955, and the greater need for advice. The Research Station was established on vacant crown land which was considered to be representative of the surrounding land. The Research Station demonstrated land development techniques, researched cropping and pasture establishment as well as fertiliser usage and sheep husbandry practices.
