Statement of Significance

The place is a representative example of the architectural improvisation of structures built to accommodate miners. The place has historic value for its representation of the development of the Australian goldfields and associated social conditions for miners. The place is historically significant for its relationship with mining operations that took place at Gwalia between 1898-1963, one of the most productive gold mines outside Kalgoorlie.

Physical Description

The small building is protected on all sides by a cgi and wire fence, which is falling down in areas and is missing some of its sheeting. The front garden has a large eucalypt in one corner.
The gabled roof of the cottage is tied down. A rear verandah is covered with a lean-to roof and the front verandah has been enclosed with cgi and timber lattice screens. The building has a metal external chimney on one side. A small outbuilding is at die rear with a barrel vault roof in cgi.
The cottage is internally lined with painted hessian and filter cloth blinds. The interior has a concrete floor and a timber plank floor.
The external wall cladding has been patched over time and many sheets have been secured in different directions. In 1987, under a National Estate Grants Program, conservation works were undertaken to seven buildings within the Gwalia Townsite. Works to this structure included: replacement of missing roof timbers, re-cladding roof, bracing walls, re-cladding walls where necessary, and sealing windows and door openings.
