Statement of Significance

The place is a good example of a federation bungalow which retains a high level of integrity and authenticity. The garden remains largely in its original layout.

The place has association with the Le Cornu family who were prominent local residents. Flora Landell (nee Le Cornu) was a distinguished ceramics artist and teacher who lived at this property until 1905.

Physical Description

Single-storey Flemish bond brick and iron house built in 1897 for the Le Cornu family. An attractive double bay fronted house situated on the banks of the Helena River.

History

1 Turton Street Guildford was built c.1897 by the first owner John Le Cornu who had moved with his family from South Australia. The Le Cornu family became prominent in Guildford during the Federation period. John Le Cornu was a well regraded gardener and his garden layout remains apparent on the property. His daughter Flora Annie Landells (Nee Le Cornu) went on to become a distinguished ceramics artists and teacher.
