Statement of Significance

The place has historic value for its association with the development of the Maylands townsite. It has significance for its social and spiritual associations, playing an important part of the cultural life of the local community.

Physical Description

A typical Salvation Army Citadel design in the Federation Freestyle and comparable to other places of the same type in Perth (ie. Highgate). It has a simple plan with a porch at the entry, though this is no longfer in use. Rendering has obscured the subtlety of the design. The building is single storey, with stucco finished brickwork and stucco decorative treatments in the mode of the Federation Freestyle.

History

The building was constructed circa 1914 and re-opened in 1975 to mark the 25th anniversary of Polish emigration priesthood in WA. The place has a much longer history in association with the Salvation Army for whom it was built. The place is an important, though compromised, visual element in Eighth Avenue and an important contributor to the precinct of the town centre.
