The place is considered to have a high level of significance to the City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder and valued by the local community. Maximum encouragement to conserve the significance of the place should be provided to the owner under the town planning scheme.

Statement of Significance

The place positively contributes to the streetscape character of Hannan Street with its parapet and combination of classical detailing and Art Nouveau detailing. The building forms part of the masonry 'wall' that extends almost the length of the street block. The aesthetic value of the building is enhanced by the fine detailing on the facade, Islamic in influence.

The place has historic value for its close association with Laslett, who built the building after making his fortune from land dealings in 1895-96.

Physical Description

A large two-storey brick and iron building with a corrugated galvanised iron roof, a decorative parapet, and pilasters that divide the facade into three bays.

The building is built to the building line of Hannan Street and forms part of the masonry 'wall' that extends almost the length of the street block. A verandah extends the length of the facade and over the pavement.

Details on the parapet and the street facade, including tiles and curved window heads and frames, are believed to be of Islamic influence of the camel traders in Kalgoorlie. The building has Art Nouveau motifs on the parapet and the moulded details that surround the window openings on the upper floor (Laurie, 1995: 20). The building also features classical mouldings on the pilasters.

Shopfronts on the ground floor have been altered.

History

Laslett made his fortune from land dealings in 1895-96, and built the two-storey building c.1906-1907 (Laurie, 1995: 20).
