The building is important for its connection with the first European settlement of the area and for its association with pioneering families.
The well preserved stone and mud mortar building is to the south east of Brocklesby homestead. Between the two buildings a plaque mounted on stone has been erected by descendants commemorating the Severin family's pioneering efforts.
On the west side an addition was made to the original building. This continues the original roof line which is supported in the extension by bush timber. There is no wall on the north side of this section.
With land being thrown open by the WA Land Company after the completion of the railway, the fertile soils around Marracoonda attracted the interest of South Australian's of German descent.
In May 1891, the Australian Advertiser reported "H & C Severin bought land off"the W.A. Land Co - 1280 acres and 1030 acres respectively, in the German settlement at Yarrabin ".
Charlie Severin, who with his brother, Hugh, had bought land off the WA Land Company in 1892, married Marianne (Polly) Wilcox who had come to the west a decade later to join her brother (Richard), sister (Mrs Tom Garstone) and mother.
In 1935 the Severin's retired to Woodanilling, taking up residence in the house now occupied by the shire secretary leaving their eldest son, Reg, at 'Brocklesby'.
