12599 Burakin Townsite

Statement of Significance

The place represents associations with the beginnings of the Burakin town and the development from then. It demonstrates an image of a rural store and represents a character and townscape of Burakin

Physical Description

Timber framed and weatherboard clad, it has a corrugated iron hipped roof with no sides eaves overhang and a skillion extension at the front and the rear. The front forms a verandah across the front with square milled timber posts and an earthen floor. The frontage has a double semi glassed entrance doors and large 12 pane windows each side.

History

In 1929, when the railway line came through, Durack's constructed the store on two blocks of land. The Duracks leased the store, and the first storekeeper was Sam Kosterich. The first attempts to obtain a school in Burakin was in 1935, but it wasn't until another attempt on 18 May 1940, that the result was approval for an assisted school. Durack's old store was the venue when the school opened on 1 July 1941. It closed by the end of the school year in 1941, and a school was built west of town. A wedding was held in the store, and it was used as the store in one of the very first "Lotto" advertisements which were screened on prime time TV.
