Statement of Significance

Historic - the men of the Pallinup Estate were all keen supporters of the Returned Servicemen's League
that was formed in Gnowangerup. What is more they were fully behind the town's fund raising efforts
for a fitting memorial to those men who had not returned from active service. After much thought it was
decided that a larger public hall should be built as a soldier's memorial. The project was begun with a
loan of 2000 pounds from AG Moir of Sandalwood. A tender of over 3000 pounds was accepted from
Cresswetl of Guildford and in February. 1923 Mick Corbett was invited to return to the town to lay the
foundation stone. Within six months the hall was officially opened by the Governor, Sir Francis
Newdegate. He was escorted to the hall by a guard of ex-light horsemen.
