Statement of Significance

The site has associations with the first commercial development in Cadoux, and with Lucy Lego, an early identity. The place demonstrates a continuity of use and a way of life in Cadoux.

History

After the railway line came through in 1929, a bush timber and tin store was established the same year by Lucy Lego. The Mincherton family were the first customers. Lucy Lego was the first owner of the store, and was a prominent identity in the Cadoux district in the early days.
Lucy Lego operated the Post Office (and phone exchange ??) at the store. During the 1940s the Commercial Bank from Dowerin operated an agency from the back of the shop where the post office was located.
With no licensed premises in Cadoux, local men would socialise in the vicinity of the store(gallon licence), and the spot became known as the "Drinking Spot.
The son of the Supermarket identity "Charlie Carter" ran the store during the mid fifties. The devastating earthquake in 1979 which destroyed many buildings in Cadoux, resulted in a considerable amount of rebuilding to the store. The place operates as the post office, agencies, fuel depot, and whatever else is required. The northern lot of the site was where the school bus operated from, and tuck shop was run by Les Tosie.
