The building has very high local significance aesthetically for its contribution to the townscape. The
buildings also have social significance as an excellent remaining example in the town of a combined
family shop and residence.
Corner shop building, rendered masonry, CGI roof, with a cantilevered awning. Although, early photographs
suggest that the awning style verandah may be original, it does not appear entirely comfortable in the streetscape.
The adjoining house has 'stucco' rendered walls and a CGI roof. Its original verandah is still intact complete with
verandah posts and simple decorative brackets or bracing at the tops of the posts. This is a good example of the
simple colonial verandah detailing that would have existed along the main street at the turn of the century. It also
provides the guidance for detailing the reinstatement of the shop verandahs. Doors and windows opening from
the house onto the verandah have been little interfered with and should be protected as part of the overall
verandah aesthetic.
The corner shop was originally owned by the Catholic Church. It was sold to Alfred Barlow to help fund the
building of the Church of Our Lady in Ara Coeli (Site No.81). The reinforced concrete shop and dwelling was built
by T. P. Crothers for Alfred Barlow in 1929. The building has been variously used as a newsagency, billiard saloon
and tobacconist. (Source: Northampton Historical Society).
