Statement of Significance

DEMOLISHED
The outdoor brick lavatories in Stirling Street were examples of typical c. 1900 outbuildings erected at the rear of private houses.

History

Backyard lavatories were once a feature of every dwelling and were wide and varied in their building fabric (timber, brick, corrugated iron, tin chimneys etc) and form, as suited the purpose.

For social and hygienic reasons, backyard lavatories were often located towards the back of the property and ‘hidden’ by trailing vines.

Local council health departments were responsible for the adequate and effective collection and disposal of waste. The ‘night soil man’ would travel through Bunbury’s many back lanes to collect waste throughout the night or early morning, with minimal disturbance to householders.

The outdoor toilets at 111 and 113 Stirling Street were demolished in 2006 due to significant vandalism.
