The site has significant associations with the Simmons family who were early settlers in the Boyanup area.
A bridge was first constructed across the Preston River in 1861. In 1863, Thomas and Charlotte Simmons settled on 40 acres of land close to the bridge in Boyanup with their young daughter, having relocated from Bunbury. Their second child, James, born in 1866, was the first child of European descent born in the district. The Simmons hired TOLs to clear the land and build a house. By 1883, there was a total of 9 children in the family. The family had a cottage and grew vegetables and crops along the bank of the Preston River. Thomas was involved in the early timber industry. Mrs Charlotte Simmons catered to the passing bullockies and timber cutters, providing food and lodging, and they established a livery stable and transit station (staging post) for the mail coaches and contracting teamsters. Mrs Simmons was also the local midwife. By the end of the 1870s there was a need for a school for their children. In the 1880s prompted by the railway line coming to Boyanup, the Simmons established a store.
