Category 5

An historic site without built features. Recommend that the site is recognised by means of a plaque, place name, interpretive material, or an architectural or urban design, in due course.

Statement of Significance

The site has associations with a way of life no longer practised, associations with the Monks, and an occupation on the land prior to agricultural activity.

Physical Description

Wide stone lined well. May have been fitted with a shadoof which is a water raising device.

History

Bishop Salvado of the New Norcia mission held extensive pastoral leases over this area. Some small areas where the water sources were located were held on freehold. In the 1870s and 1880s a number of wells were dug by the Brothers from the Mission, assisted by aboriginal helpers. Up until the late 1880s cattle had been grazed in the area, but from that time, the Monks concentrated their interests closer to New Norcia.

Behanging was the name of the track which ran north from Bolgart (now Behanging Rd). Hancey would have travelled that route when he surveyed Mt Rupert.
