Significant but not essential to an understanding of the history of the district: photographically recorded prior to any major redevelopment or demolition.

Statement of Significance

The site is a prominent natural feature of the landscape and is associated with the first
European exploration of the area.

Physical Description

A gently undulating plain which lies either side of Oakland Road.

History

It was so named by Governor James Stirling with JS Roe on the Great Southern
Expedition in 1835.

In describing this area Roe wrote -

"I passed over £ mile; of beautiful country, the grass above our horses knees, after which we crossed over a
small eminence dividing the valley of our bivouac in its progress from the southern half a mile further
carried us up to the ascent to an ironstone covered hill, when as usual the grass was not so good, but it had
proved of such excellent quality and was so abundant yesterday afternoon and this morning that His
Excellency conferred in the included space of about two miles the name of 'Haymaker Downs'. Time did
not admit of their extent being examined but the good grassy country appeared to extend far beyond our
power of vision."
