Historic - This shed was left for the use of all the WW I soldier settlers on the Pallinup Estate. With
eight stands they would shear up to 1,000 to 1,100 a day and most sheep came from quite a distance.
Most of the Pallinup flocks were quite small (about 500 to 700 or so flocks would be shorn a day.
Social - The Pallinup Estate (although I have only listed the shearing shed/ was a major strength in
local community matters. These men, that settled here, were instrumental in the building of the
Memorial Hall. There was a school and tennis courts nearby and there are sites dotted all around the
Estate and surrounding holdings where these men settled. I have photographed most of these and the
photographs are attached.
The shearing shed is made of local timber - whitegum uprights
with the sides of slabs of salmon gum timber, corrugated iron.
Pallinup Estate was first granted to Lord Brassey, one of the investors in the West Australian Land
Company, builders railway line from Beverley to Albany in the 1880s. After this the property passed
from him to James Munroe then to David Stewart. In 1919 the property, along with Martinup Estate
was sold to the government for soldier settlement. After WW1 the property was carved up into blocks of
650 acres and some twenty settlers were granted these blocks.
Situated near the upper reaches of the Pallinup River.
