History

The Agricultural Bank opened in Lake Grace in mid 1938. On 1 October 1945 the R & I (Rural and Industries) Bank replaced the Agricultural Bank. On that day 4 country branches became the R& I. On 19 November 1945, the R& I opened a branch in Lake Grace (in the Ladies cloak room of the original Lake Grace Roads Board Office and Hall). The Minister for Lands, Frank Wise (who later became Premier), instigated the change with the recognition of the diminishing role of the bank as a lending institution, and a greater need for a more general role for the bank as the established farmers now had a need for credit accounts. The bank operated from another premises for a short time while the new offices were being built. On 14 March 1956 the Chairman of the Roads Board, Dave Elliott, opened the new branch of the R & I bank. A carnival atmosphere prevai ed in town, as the new building was portrayed by the R & I hierarchy as 'a vote of confidence' in the Lake Grace district It was the first time the money was stored on site. In c1990, the R& I Bank became Bankwest. Until H995, the Bank was Western Australian owned and operated. A take-over was effected by the Scottish Bank at that time.
