Statement of Significance

Postan's Cottage has local historical significance. It is the last of the early homes of pioneer families in Hope Valley. George Postans was amongst the first convicts transported to W.A. in 1850. He soon obtained his ticket of leave and a full pardon in 1858. He married Harriet Green (nee Lewington) and took up 100 acres (lot 241) in the Kwinana area south of Fremantle. It is claimed that the area was named Hope Valley by his daughters. His youngest son, Frederick, on his marriage took over 27 odd acres of the original grant for vegetable and fruit growing and built the cottage from local stone, including rough stone turned up by the plough in the low lying ground. The architraves of the main door and windows demonstrate the the builders had some knowledge of stone masonry.

Physical Description

Originally a two roomed stone cottage with three added later, the last is entered only from the outside. Inside walls of four rooms have been rendered and the outside has traces of light green paint. Vandalism and fire has destroyed the roof and most of the timber used although part of the corrugated roof remains over the outside room. There is evidence of a verandah across the front built up at a later stage with bricks.
