Shire of East Pilbara |
One of the two main buildings of certain Pilbara homestead buildings is of a long rectangular form divided into a series of rooms end to end, with an unlined vaulted corrugated iron roof. The older building is unique in that it is of log cabin construction with sophisticated door and window joinery. Few properties have a bowshed which is still functioning.
It is a demonstration of station life over the years.
The original owners were Messrs Stewart and Wehl – the latter a German being responsible for the log cabin construction. It was inherited by Stewart’s daughter Thora, well known as a storekeeper and publican in Marble bar in more recent years.
The homestead consists of two rectangular buildings in parallel uses and each surrounded
by verandahs. The verandah of each block adjoins to form a breezeway parallel with the long axis.
The smaller of the pair has timber walls constructed in log cabin fashion. The timber windows and doors are of quite sophisticated design. The roof is steeply pitched corrugated iron and is hipped. The date of construction is thought to be 1907.
The larger block has concrete block walls with a corrugated iron vaulted roof and dates from about 1933. Neither wing has a ceiling.
