Statement of Significance

This building makes a significant contribution to the streetscape of the Maylands townsite. It is significant for its architectural design for which a competition was held. It has historic importance for its social and cultural associations with the local community.

Physical Description

The building employs elements of classical architecture to enclose a simple hall. A decorative parapet conceals a tiled gabled roof to the hall. The gables are vented at a high level. A single storey classically derived structure with tuck pointed brick walls and stucco pilaster and cornices. The building also has an upper croft.

History

The Maylands library is an important building that visually defines the entry to the Maylands village and is a place of great social importance. A decision was made to erect a public hall in 1919 and the site was cleared prior to a competition being held for its design. It was estimated to cost 3000 pound, however the final cost was in the vicinity of 4500 pound. It was officially opened on 7 May 1921 by E W Hamer, the first Freeman of the City of Stirling. The park surrounds and war memorial were developed in later years.
