Statement of Significance

Kwelkan is significant because of its association with the shipment of grain, and the importance of the agricultural industry to the economy of the district.

History

Reserve number 13098 was set aside for the townsite of Kwelkan on 11th November 1910 (Government Gazette p.3403). The townsite was declared
under the Land Act on 18th March 1912 (Government Gazette p.1231)
The name is a phonetic form of the Aboriginal name for a nearby water source, Quelcan Well (In the Trayning Shire)
Bulk Handling facilities were installed at Kwelkan Siding in 1938. The bin was a 1936 type with a capacity of 1000 tonnes. The last recorded delivery of wheat was in 1975, and the bin was demolished and removed in 1978.
