Statement of Significance

This place is a representative example of an early shop with an attached dwelling. It has historic value for its association with the development of the Maylands townsite, making a significant
contribution to this streetscape.

Physical Description

A single storey shop with attached house rendered in a classically derived design, using its elements freely. It features a decorative parapet and an original awning, with the original front of metal joinery and dado tiling. The baker's ovens are still in place. It has load bearing brick and stucco decorative treatments and an iron roof with a metal framed shop front and cantilevered awning over the pavement.

History

The shop was a bakery from sometime before 1920 and remained a bakery until the 1950s. It is associated with the Rossbach family who owned it for many years.

The Rossbachs were forced to close during the two World Wars and the shop was damaged during anti-German protests. It is a very fine example of a shop and attached house, that is almost intact and therefore is quite rare in the Maylands context.
