Statement of Significance

The place is significant as an early and substantial commercial development in the main street of Capel. It is the only corner building and had considerable streetscape and townscape importance to the town of Capel.

Physical Description

Red brick construction with a double gable roof fronting Forrest Rd. The entry doors are on the truncated street corner. A skillion verandah wraps the corner, part of the Roe Rd frontage, and all the Forrest Rd frontage. The verandah is supported by square timber posts with decorative brackets.

History

In the1930's the place was Mort's car showrooms (also had the power staion until 1937). In 1940, JH Mort made alterations to the shop front and again in 1946. Frank Stephens ran a newsagents in the corner shop, and his sister Mavis (married Gordon Smillie) ran a haberdashery and manchester store - Cronshaw's agents, in the adjoining shop. Later McCormack's Cafe was run by McCormack and Oliver, and later just McCormack who also ran it as a sports store. After McCormack, Ted James ran a cafe. In the 1960's, it was Sherry's Grocery Store, an antique shop and Mid's Folley in the 1980's. In 1997, a supermarket and video store established after years of being vacant.
