Statement of Significance

The Catholic Presbytery has historic and social significance for its connection with the establishment and activities of the Roman Catholic Church in Dongara and in particular with the Catholic priest, Father Lecaille. Further the building has significance being representative of early vernacular form and is an important element in the character of the town.

Physical Description

The building is of limestone rubble construction with a steeply pitched corrugated iron gable roof which extends at a shallower pitch to cover the verandah to the front (east) with a broken-back skillion roof to the rear (west). The verandah is supported on timber posts with a hand rail between. Windows are timber framed with small panes. At each end of the building is a stone chimney which forms a bay with coping at verandah roof height.

History

The former Catholic Presbytery was built by Fr. Lecaille. After the closure of the first Catholic Church at east Dongara, the building was used as a church for services, marriages and baptisms in the early 1890's.
