Physical Description

152 Rokeby Road was built as a modest house in the popular Californian Bungalow style of the inter-war years.
The surviving evidence of its original design includes a pair of large gables to the street frontage, finished with a simple pattern of vertical, horizontal and diagonal battens over a flush panelled face. A tall rendered chimney with a face-brick cap also remains along the northern side of the former residence.
Other than the gables the façade has been heavily modified as part of the adaptation of the place as two shops. However, the form and nature of the place as a former residence is still capable of interpretation.

History

Online family trees suggest that Florence Eliza Bishop (nee Price) (c.1878-1969) and Edward Dean (c.1879-1960) were married in Perth in c.1928. This couple were living in Cottesloe in c.1931, when Edward Dean established a business by the name of Westralia Cement Products in Axon Street, Subiaco.
In the Electoral Rolls of 1936, a newly built house at 152 Rokeby Road was listed as the residence of Edward Dean (manufacturer) and his wife, Florence. They remained here until c.1943, before moving to Claremont.
From c.1943 until at least 1949 the Westralian Cast Stone Co, monumental masons, occupied the whole of Lots 5 & 6 (then known as 148-152 Rokeby Road).
The c.1936 residence is still clearly identifiable, but the remainder of the site has been redeveloped.

Integrity/Authenticity

The two street front gables and the chimney have a high level of authenticity.
The shopfronts and awning have a low level of authenticity.

Condition

The building appears to be generally in fair condition commensurate with the age of the building (based on streetscape inspection only).

Contributes to the significance of the heritage area
Traditionally many of the retail premises within the Heritage Area had associated residences. The majority of these were integrated with the shop (either as a small flat at the rear of a single storey shop or extending as a larger residence with rooms on the first floor of a two storey building). 152 Rokeby Road is a prominent local example of the close relationship between the place of work and private residence for many shopkeepers of the early twentieth century and through the inter-war years.
In this context the place makes an important contribution to the diverse character of the traditional streetscape (as developed in c.1898-1937).
