Statement of Significance

The Postmaster's Residence (now alongside the Post Office) was moved in 1922 from its original site to Wyndham Port. Before it became the postmaster's residence it served as a radio telegraph station established in 1914. The station provided an important communication link for shipping, especially in war time. Later the minerals around the station interferred with the signals so it was decided to close the station. The telegraph station was moved to Broome but the house remained until its removal in 1922.
Both historically and scientifically, the building's value lies in its age, architectural features and its setting. Aesthetically it is immensly appealing. As a former postmaster's residence it is linked historically and socially to the old post office. The building forms an integral link with the historic port precinct as a whole. Today it is used as tourist accommodation for the visitors touring the Wyndham district.

Physical Description

This building has undergone some changes both in structure and use. Early photographs indicate the building has not altered significantly, although all external wooden shutters have gone. Additional interior walls have been added to create more accommodation. Because the basic integrity of the building is still iiitact, the building still retains the charm of early nineteenth century government building techniques.
Today the building stands as a guest house surrounded by verandahs on both sides. The house overlooks the Cambridge Gulf and a well maintained garden and lawns further enhance the house. It is painted yellow and green, has pot plants hanging from the eaves and a table and chairs on the verandah make for relaxing living. The paths are made of stones collected locally. The house is in excellent condition, and the overall impression is one of being loved and cared for.
