The building is distinguishable by its long rectangular form, but it contributes to the massing of the precinct (comprising old Police Station and Magistrate's House, Troopers' barracks, Lock-up and Stables). The use of construction materials is consistent throughout the precinct providing a unifying theme.
The building is located directly behind the old Police Station and Magistrate's House (Site No. 9). The building is long and narrow with front and rear verandahs.
The Barracks comprise five rooms, originally single-mens sleeping quarters. One room, now converted to a two-bedroom flat, was originally the kitchen and dining room. At the rear is a verandah with toilets at one end, and a single room at the other. Across the front of the building is a lean-to roof that protects a verandah.
The windows are double-hung sashes. Some skylights to doorways and servery windows remain. The interior has a combination of wall and ceiling linings of ripple iron and fibro-cement.
The place has been upgraded and much of the building fabric has been renewed including exterior wall linings, roof cladding and verandah posts.
Some rooms are now leased.
