Statement of Significance

The place has historic value for its associations with the period of convict development in Toodyay, James Smith, Pensioner Guards and Joseph Monger. The place has aesthetic value for its contribution to the streetscape of the town of Toodyay.

Physical Description

Brick and iron cottage date from the 1850's. open verandah to the front with timber posts and brackets. A timber extension is to the side. The shop is of brick and iron construction with shallow pitched roof with roughcast rendered gable and verandah extending over the pavement. Extension to the rear. The individual panels forming the roof do not fit smoothly and gives the appearance of the roof being patched. There is also straining to the panels just below the ridge line. The rest of the building appears to be in good condition.

History

After the arrival of the convict party in Toodyay, Pensioner Guards and their families required accommodation. Land allotments were marked out and James Smith (Jas) was allocated this lot. In 1862, Joseph Monger bought this property and the next to build the Newcastle Hotel (now Toodyay Tavern).
