Charcoal Pit

Statement of Significance

One of the few identified remaining charcoal pits in the Williams District. It is likely that others
have been filled in over time.

Physical Description

Situated approx 200m to the NE from the Williams River in Dookening. The charcoal pit is
rectangular with the earth around both sides and runs N/S.

History

Charcoal was made by placing timber into the excavated hollow and setting fire to it. A covering of
earth placed over the top restricted the rate of burning to a smoulder. In this way the wood would
be dried but not burnt and form into a black substance in small blocks. This charcoal was the prime
ingredient for heating the blacksmith's forge which was imperative for the shaping of horse shoes
and mechanical repairs in the pre welding days. During the second World War when petrol was
rationed, charcoal was used as a fuel for motor vehicles.
